HCDA reviews 2 plans for Kewalo Basin in Kakaako

Two new proposals for Kewalo Basin were presented to HCDA. The Hawaii Community Development Authority heard two new proposals from 2 developers for this small commercial harbor. Initial conceptual designs included a large addition of commercial development and lots of added parking. The ideas the were presented previously raised some objections from the public. There is a real concern about loss of the open space and a place for local residents to enjoy if the Basin is developed.

Kewalo Waterfront Partners is a group of Japanese investors who presented one plan.  They intend on renovating 4 buildings and making an indoor farmer’s market, plus restaurants and a food hall.  They scaled back their plan and lowered their building heights to make the public more amenable to the redevelopment.

Howard Hughes Corp also submitted a plan.  This would be their extension of their Ward Village project.  They have a particular vested interest since they are building the Waiea and Gateway Towers directly across the street. Howard Hughes also significantly scaled back their earlier plans and increased the landscaping between Kewalo Basin and the Ala Moana Beach Park. They also included much more open space.  It also has plans to build the Kewalo Ice House which is an homage to a historic building once located on the site.  Their emphasis what trying to construct everything at one time and in a holistic matter.  The goal is to give the least disruption to the harbor users.

We are excited to see what these changes will bring.
