Ward Village is to be redesigned. Howard Hughes Corporation announced they are overhauling their plans for their 60+ acres of development in Ward Village. Since late last year, the developer has been considering design changes to improve the neighborhood and the experience of the residents. After gaining control of the re-development of Kewalo Basin, the focus has turned towards trying to create more pedestrian connectivity from Ward Village to the harbor. The addition of shops and restaurants in Kewalo Basin makes these changes ideal.
The pedestrian-friendly concept in Kakaako
The new pedestrian-friendly concept is, in part, to create sky bridges. These walkways would allow pedestrians to easily get to activities, shops, and restaurants on both sides of Honolulu’s Ala Moana Boulevard. The concept is to create a more enjoyable experience in the neighborhood as there is a more direct connection from the Central Plaza to the harbor. The new focus on the master plan will be creating an even better sense of place and touching more on the history of the area.
Smarter Living with A’ali’i condo
To me, it seems these new ideas are born out of the concept brought forward by the presentation of the A’ali’i condo. It has to do with the concept of “smarter living”. The smarter living concept surrounds simplifying life and spending more time outside. The ability to walk or take a short bike ride to everything that you may need, from shops to grocery stores, to even entertainment and fitness. To have everything within blocks of your home makes life less complicated. Residents ideally have more time to enjoy life rather than sitting in traffic.
Gateway Towers postponed
The new design places the Gateway towers on hold. The much anticipated Richard Meier condos may still happen, but after the master plan for the community is carefully considered.
