Lanikai Beach homes & community

Lanikai an exclusive enclave of beachy elegant homes within Kailua, attracts many affluent buyers who love residing close to this picturesque beach while enjoying the close-knit community. Located in an area sandwiched between the mountains and beautiful Kailua bay this community only has one road in and one road out. The beach is one of the most stunning beaches that Hawaii has to offer, with crystal clear water and the horizon dotted with two islands, Moku Nui and Moku Iki commonly called ‘the Mokuluas’.

Beachfront vs. Oceanfront

As a result of erosion, there are only a limited number of homes that actually front on the soft powdery sand. The rest are merely waterfront. Continued steps to encourage the sand to return are ongoing. Estates and homes located on the hillside can have a drop-dead gorgeous view of the water and the Mokuluas. Most are still within a fairly easy walk to get to the water. In the middle of Lanikai lies a flattish sandy area where there are mostly casual beachy homes. There are still some houses from the 1930s sprinkled in amongst the newer fair. Some seem palatial while others are small cottages. Most of the properties here are in the 7500 to 11,000 square foot range. The immense variety of homes means that there is something for everyone. One would never know that there was a time when Lanikai was not a desirable place. The sandy soil made it very challenging to grow much of anything in this once agriculturally focused community.

Japanese immigrants farmed watermelons that they sold or traded to carve out a life for themselves. Lanikai has since attracted many notable people. Paul Mitchell built a stunning residence right on the water. Michelle Pfeiffer also has a home here. And Wally Amos, the originator of Famous Amos cookies also calls Lanikai ‘home’.

The Lanikai Community

The community is very active. Many are out jogging or riding bikes and skateboards around the perimeter while others are carrying their kayaks and surf equipment to the beach. Residents all make effort for a better community. In further efforts to support their community, residents purchased a sizable parcel of land in the middle of Lanikai for a community park. The neighborhood had to take out a mortgage to purchase the property. People chipped in and bake sales and craft fairs were held to raise money to pay down the debt. The Lanikai Mortgage Players was also formed that wrote and put on plays with all volunteers and revenue from ticket sales went to pay down the debt. It was not long before the mortgage had been paid off, but the craft fairs and plays continue to help pay for upkeep and improvements. All of this goes to support a strong sense of community in this neighborhood. This makes Lanikai a truly wonderful place to call home.
