Hawaii plans to create electric car network

From the Wall Street Journal:  Hawaii makes big bet on electric cars

Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle unveiled a plan to create an electric car network with between 70,000 and 100,000 recharging points through a public-private partnership by 2012.

“Under the plan, consumers would buy or lease electric cars, and Better Place would supply recharging services and batteries.”

“Better Place, a Palo Alto, Calif., company founded in 2007 by former SAP AG executive Shai Agassi, is pursuing similar arrangements in Israel, Australia, Denmark and the San Francisco area.”

Hawaii is working to reduce energy dependancy.  Because of its remoteness, most everything has to be shipped into the islands.  Hawaiian Electric is currently building a biofuel plant to help supply Hawaii with more renewal energy sources and they have said that they may offer special recharging rates to support the project.  Currently Hawaii has some of the highest electricty costs in the nation.
