Golden Week tourism in Hawaii may be more golden than first thought

Tourism officials in Hawaii are seeing improved bookings for trips to Hawaii during Japan’s Golden Week.  The Hawaii Tourism Authority has been stepping up campaigns in Japan to encourage more tourism in the wake of Japan’s disaster and it appears to be paying off.

Although the expectation is that bookings will be lower than last year, the tourism situation may not be as dire as had been thought.  In addition there is also encouragement from the Japanese government for people to pump up the economy and travel to relieve stress.

JAL bookings are down 41% year over year, but Hawaiian Air is adding a special charter flight from Osaka to Honolulu for Golden Week.

Some in the Hawaii Tourism have said that they expect tourism numbers to rebound this Summer, while the conservative view sees until 2012 for a recovery in Hawaii Tourism.
