In selling your home clutter equals chaos

In selling your home clutter equals chaos.  Sellers often ask me, “How much do I need to clear out of my home? Is it okay, if I just leave boxes neatly stacked in the corner?”.  The simple answer is, “No”.  The answer is more detailed in a recent blog in the New York Times.  The fact is that clutter frequently says to a prospective new buyer that the place needs to be renovated.  This is why decluttering and giving your home a really deep clean before it goes on the market is so important.  Everyone wants to get the most money out of seller their home and this is a relatively simple way and inexpensive way to get more from your property.  Just as the chaos of clutter makes potential buyers think the place needs to be renovated, boxes in the corner say two things.  First it says that there is not enough storage and second it makes the room smaller.  Hawaii’s homes tend to be rather small, so every square inch is important, so why would you make a room seem smaller than what it is?

We work with out sellers extensively on the presentation of their properties.  We can help with many aspects including providing suggestions about what improvements would bring a higher value to the property.  Frequently we recommend a seller to rent a storage facility.  That small cost can make a huge difference int he amount that the seller gets for the property and the time that the property is on the market.
