  1. Hawaii
  2. Big Island

The Big Island (officially named Hawaii) is the youngest of all of the Hawaiian island.  With five 'active' volcanoes and rough coastlines, it is perhaps the most dramatic island.  Where else can you go to experience snowboarding, swimming int eh warm ocean and hiking a volcano in the same day?  Hawaii real estate, or rather, Big Island real estate varies just as much as the landscape does.  The island consists of basically seven different regions:  Hilo, Kona, Kohala, North Kohala, Puna, Ka'u. and the Hamakua coast.

Hilo - Hilo is a vast area that is green and lush. It is the gateway to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and also has a historic downtown right next to the expansive Hilo Bay. Single-family homes can be more affordable here with the benefits of having access to lots of shopping. You can also find large inexpensive lots of raw land ready to build your dream home on in Places like Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Ka'u - is very rural and large part of Hawaii Volcano National park sits within the region of Ka'u. This area represents a step back in time.  This is how much of Hawaii used to be.  It is lush, green, open spaces, and rural.  In the upcountry, there are coffee farms and cattle ranches.

Puna - This district is also very rural and sits tot he south of Hilo.  Sitting at the base of Kilauea volcano this area is perhaps most famous for the town of Kalapana which was partially covered by a lava flow in the 1990.  The town of Pahoa is there which an old mill town and is a hub of activity for the Puna.  The area is still like much of the Big Island, rural, raw and open.  People that choose to live here love the simple and uncomplicated life that the Big Island has to offer.

Hamakua Coast.  This area used to be the hub of sugar cane growing and much of the houses built up around this growing.  Now the scenic route along the water links this remote area to the ocean and back to Hilo.  Enjoy the stunning backdrop of the lush valleys and the ocean in neighborhoods such as Laupahoehoe.

Kona - Is perhaps one other more active parts of the Big Island.  This has one of the 2 main airports on the island (the other being Hilo International Airport).  The real estate here is very diverse from large homes with land to condos and town homes.  It has a lot to offer and you are not so remote that you are too far from restaurants, shopping and other more urban activities.

North Kohala - This area covers the northern most tip of the Big Island.  North Kohala is largely undeveloped and open pasture land.  One of the main towns in this district is Hawi.

Kohala Coast - While there are many lava fields along the Kohala Coast, South Kohala is a scenic area now home to many luxury resorts and resort style living condominiums and townhomes.  The resorts and communities lie just 20 minutes from Kona international and has become the location many wealthy and famous choose to get away from it all.  The beautiful coastline has some world-renowned resorts.
